The Cockatiel is a small parrot, closely related to Cockatoo's. It is very common in captivity and makes for an excellent pet parrot. It's noticeable 'crest' on the top of its head is erected when the bird is excited or startled, but usually held down the rest of the time. These bids cover the same range as Budgerigars in Australia, and like the budgies they also occur further away from the coastal areas. These can be seen in huge flocks of hundreds of birds. They are very social animals and require much mental stimulation in captivity to remain happy and healthy.
